Smoke-free depts

Three Government departments in Christchurch will become smoke-free from August 1. The Housing Corporation, Social Welfare Department and Rural Bank recently voted to make their offices in the Housing Corporation building in Cathedral Square smoke-free.

They become the latest departments to follow the example of the Health Department in. banning smoking from Government

offices. Staff and visitors will be confronted by anti-smoking posters and educational material. Visitors to the offices who continue smoking will be advised politely but firmly of the ban. The decision was the result of a unanimous vote by departmental staff, a spokesman said yesterday. “Of 183 Housing Corporation staff, only 10 were smokers,” he said.
