Top Maori students studied

PA Hamilton Researchers in the Waikato are examining why some of New Zealand’s top Maori students do so well at school.

Hilary and John Mitchell are visiting the top performers in last year’s school certificate maths and English papers who declared they were Maori or partMaori. The researchers are contracted to the Department of Education. Mrs Mitchell yesterday said they were talking to the students, their families and schools to find why the top 20 girls and top 20 boys had done so well. The exercise was designed to identify patterns or common factors which could be useful in helping others, she said.

The research would give the department a general picture from which it might want to study aspects in greater detail.

The subjects used in choosing the students to be interviewed — maths and English — cover almost all students at school certificate level. The researchers are interviewing students from Hamilton, Tokoroa, Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti and Taupo in the Waikato/King Country leg of their trip around the country. Their report will be sent to the students’ families and schools.
