Nervous system probe

Researchers at Edinburgh University have been given $1.6 million by the British Medical Research Council (M.R.C.) towards new studies of the complex interaction of the body’s nervous system.

Over the next five years, the team will concentrate on the spinal cord with particular attention on those parts whichdeal with sensory messages from the skin, writes Irene Hamilton, of the London Press

Service.

The work could have important implications for patients suffering from damage to their nervous systems. When the team have more information on pain sensation and how it can be controlled, it could lead to the production of more effective and safer pain-killing drugs. The M.R.C. grant to Professor Alan Brown and Dr David Maxwell brings total funding for their project to SSM.
