Middle East
Sir,—l. G. Shaskey’s picture of peaceful co-existence on the West Bank and Gaza (July 11) denies the reality of 20 years of repressive military occupation and the denial of human rights and the right of self-determina-tion. It is equally misleading to speak of the Palestinian struggle against that occupation without also acknowledging the previous, and well-documented, use of violence against both British and Palestinians by Jewish para-mili-tary groups such as the Irgun and the Stern Gang — led by Begin and Shamir. New Zealand and international support of the P.L.O. as a legitimate representative of the Palestinian people is justified by the response to a 1986 opinion poll conducted by a Jerusalem newspaper, “Al Fajr,” in which an overwhelming 93 per cent gave full support to the P.L.O. How can the Israeli Government possibly justify its continued rejection of the P.L.O. and its declared intention to remain on Palestinian territory? . — Yours, etc., ALISTAIR PRINGLE. July 17, 1988.
