Radio diary

Shirley Boys’ High School and Linwood High School start pilot programmes on Plains FM (96.9) in the next week. Shirley presents a programme of variety and music from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday; Linwood’s effort (interviews and music) goes on the air at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Hagley High School already has a regular show (Tuesdays, 6.5 p.m.) with news about pupils who have achieved something, notices, interviews, “happenings” and general chitchat about the school and its people. We have a chance to hear some historic recordings in “Talking About Music” this evening (Concert, 7.55 p.m.), including Brahms at the keyboard, Brecht singing from “The Threepenny Opera” and Joyce reading. Sir Arthur Sullivan spoke but did not play music for an early recording, and registered horror at the thought that “so much bad and hideous music will go on record for ever.”

John Amis, the programme’s presenter, also visits Grieg’s home at Troldhaugen, which has become something of a shrine for Norwegians. The sixth programme in the 14-part “Award Winners 1987” (Concert, tomorrow, 7 p.m.) features Handel’s oratorio, "Athalia” with Joan Sutherland, Emma Kirby, Aled Jones, the choir of New College, Oxford and the Academy of Ancient Music. “Athalia,” the composer’s third English oratorio, had its premiere at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, in July, 1733. Spike Milligan fans can hear him twice on National Radio on Saturday: in “AFAL — Anythir f' ;h” " ,3f

thing for a laug. at 1. p.m. and “Pick of the Goons” at 3 p.m.

“AFAL” features an interview recorded on a ship in Wellington in July, 1959. Saturday’s episode of “The Goons” is titled “The Stolen Postman.”

“Raffles Hotel, Singapore,” a 8.8. C. feature on the changing fortunes of the famous hotel, can be heard on National at 9.20 a.m. on Sunday. Among the many contributors are Hayley Mills, Lady Mary Wilson, Tan Geok Swee and Isla Sharp. —John Hickey
