Jet hired for S.O.S. flight
PA Auckland An Auckland medical team has taken an air ambulance to Japan to bring home a seriously ill New Zealand woman. x Mrs Marina Larsen, of the Auckland area, is believed to be suffering from bronchial pneumonia with complications.
A specially equipped British Aerospace 125 jet of Corporate Flight Services, of Ardmore, was due to leave Auckland Airport at 5 a.m. today for the 12-hour flight. Aboard the plane, which has been fitted with a ventilator and oxygen for the journey, will be an Auckland intensive-care specialist, Mr Stephen Streat, and a nurse. The cost of the mercy flight, between $65,000 and $75,000, ex-
cluding medical expenses, is being met by the Larsens’ insurance company.
The second secretary at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo, Miss Janet Lowe, said the Larsens had been on holiday in Japan with a tour party. She said that Mrs Larsen was being flown home under her medical insurance cover.
Mr Dennis Thompson, chief executive of Corporate Flight Services, said he thought Mrs Larsen had been in hospital since May. The cost of keeping patients in hospital in some countries was 'mind-boggling,” Mr Thompson said. “That is why it is cheaper to pick them up.
