Waiau ski-ing under study

Potential ski areas are being investigated on Mount Lyford station near Waiau where 97 wilderness sections in a new subdivision are about to go on the market.

The new subdivision is a joint venture between a construction company, Wilkins and Davies, Ltd, and Doug and Jenny Simpson, the owners of Mount Lyford, 23km north-east of Waiau.

Mr Simpson said in Christchurch yesterday that the sections would be on the market in about four weeks.

“The prices are still to be established but they will be attractive to average families on today’s market,” he said. A 3.5 km mountain road has been constructed from the top of the subdivision. A number of ski areas within 10 or 15 minutes of the subdivision are under investigation. According to Mr Simpson, there are about 400 ha of skiable areas on freehold land.

The joint venture was also “looking pretty closely” at the possibility of ice-skating on Lake Stella.
