Aust, gold stocks do best

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket yesterday closed lower for the second day running, although it managed to claw back some of its earlier losses in afternoon trading. Brokers said trading remained fairly quiet, although investors regained some confidence when Tokyo firmed up about 400 points, recouping most of Tuesday’s falls. The best performers yesterday were gold stocks, given a boost by improved bullion prices. Brokers said the market’s performance was slightly disappointing given the surge in bullion in New York. But investors were generally cautious with little local news to direct the market and uncertainty over the outlook offshore. Volumes remained low at 112.65 million shares worth sAustl72.l7M and rises barely exceeded declines. Most leading industrial stocks fell, although BHP held steady at 848 c from earlier lows and CSR was steady at 480 c. Bond Corp, which was believed to have bought a further 5.39 M shares in Bell Group, slumped 13c to 212 c while Bell Group was steady at 263 c. Bell Resources rose lc to 171 c and Bond Media also lc to 80c. Entrepreneurs were among the hardest hit, with Elders IXL off 2c to 327 c, Adelaide Steamship 10c to 686 c and Industrial Equity 3c to 184 c, although AFP gained 2c to 104 c. Banks rose from earlier lows, with Westpac up 6c to 654 c and the NAB 2c to 626 c as 3.26 M rights traded. However, the ANZ lost 4c to 500 c. Elsewhere, FAI and Amatii each fell 10c to 430 c and 890 c respectively and Brambles 20c to 1030 c.
