Liquor group to disband

PA Wellington New Zealand’s major liquor industry lobby group, the Liquor Industry Council, will be disbanded after 70 years because its members believe they can do the job themselves.

The council will close after the early retirement of its director, Mr Jim Thompson, which is expected early next year. Mr Thompson said it was hoped his two staff — a researcher and a personal assistant — would find other positions by then. The idea of disbanding the council had been in the wind for some time, he said, the decision finally being made last week.

The members of the council — Lion Nathan, Magnum, the Hotel Association and the Wholesale Wine and Spirits Association — believe they can now do the organisation’s work. The public affairs manager of Lion Nathan, Mr Des Fitzgerald, said that council members were already doing so.
