Decision made by Khomeiny

NZPA-Reuter Nicosia Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeiny, personally made the decision to accept a ceasefire in the war with Iraq, Iran’s military chief, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, said. Speaking on Iranian television, monitored in Nicosia, Mr Rafsanjani said the decision would open a new chapter in Iran’s history. “The Islamic Republic finally made an historic and important decision which, with the Imam’s (Khomeiny’s) decision to accept a ceasefire, will open a new chapter in our history,” he said. “The Imam assigned me to hold a meeting of religious scholars, political figures and officials and sent a message which was discussed at that meeting.”
