Lawyer to be charged with fraud

PA Auckland Charges are expected to be laid today against an Auckland barrister, alleging conspiracy to defraud the Inland Revenue Department of $113,000 as a result of a GST claim. The case relates to a claim for a GST return filed with the Manukau branch of the department alleging an Auckland company had paid $1.25 million for a fishing boat. The 43-year-old barrister in February, 1987, set up the company which later bought the vessel. The company changed its name in August last year. Three other principals of the company are already facing an identical charge to the one expected to be laid against the barrister. Their names have been suppressed. The three, including the company accountant and an Auckland property developer, will appear in the Auckland District Court today to be remanded for a depositions hearing.
