Miss Roker provides highlight
Special correspondent Hastings A fast 800 m by Miss Roker and a good working gallop from the hurdlers, Alcazar and Onewa Lad, highlighted a wet and cold track session at Hastings yesterday morning. Galloping was done on the plough (slushy) and No. 1 grass (heavy). Miss Roker (Cleghorn) seemed to revel in the conditions when sprinting 800 m on the plough in 52.65, the--last
600 m in 38.85. She shows a fair amount of speed but has not been able to round her races off. Onewa Lad (Legg) and Alcazar (Howard) worked together over 1200 m on the No. 1 grass, being timed over the last 600 m in 42.65. Onewa Lad was scratched from last Saturday’s Matamata meeting when no suitable hurdle rider could be found for him. Both he and Alcazar are accepted for the
hurdle race at this Saturday’s Manawatu Hunt meeting. Capone (Gifford) ended his work on the No. 1 grass with 400 m in 27s and appeared to be revelling in the conditions. He steps out on the flat at Awapuni on Saturday and could go a bold race if the track is heavy.
