Extra distance will suit Willy Run

By

ALEX McMILLAN

Willy Run, seemingly rejuvenated since transferring to Paul Newton’s stable, should further his splendid record in the South Island with a win in the Countdown Foodmarkets Handicap Pace at Addington Raceway this evening.

A game third to Matai Chip in his southern debut at Rangiora on June 11, Willy Run revealed great reserves of stamina when dead-heating for first over 2600 m at Addington on July 9, racing three wide (without cover) for the last 1400 m. The son of Mercedes rallied magnificently over the last 50m that night to share victory with Idle Bromac and should be improved, the race coming four weeks after the Rangiora event.

The extra 600 m of this evening’s contest should only enhance his prospects further against similar opposition to that which he accounted for 11 days ago. With dead-heats effectively penalty-free in harness racing, Willy Run will again start from 10m. Le Marais is an interesting “fresh” runner in this evening’s C 3 event, which is the first leg of the New Brighton Harness Racing Club’s T.A.B.

double. A brilliant trial winner at Addington last Wednesday, Le Marais, a Plat du Jour four-year-old, was disappointing in two starts at Ashburton over Queen’s Birthday week-end after returning a fine effort for third behind the talented Fair Chip at Addington on May 27. However, his run at last week’s trials was outstanding. Slow to begin from 30m, Le Marais easily disposed

of what was just an ordinary field by 10 lengths, but his time of 3:22.4 for 2600 m (last 2400 m in

3:03.78) made irrelevant any questions regarding the quality of his opposition. A repeat effort this evening would . have Le Marais prominent at the finish, even from 20m. Twilight Time, unlucky not to finish closer than ninth on July 9, must be respected from the limit mark, while Charming

George, Idle Bromac, Falcon Hanover and Beau Peer are others with definite claims. Strollalong, never clear when seventh over 2000 m on July 9, should atone in the second leg of the double, the Avon City Ford Mobile Pace (2600 m The Lordship four-year-old will be better suited by this evening’s extra distance and deserves to start favourite on the

strength of some gutsy performances on the Nel-son-Marlborough circuit. Three of the obvious dangers to Strollalong in an interesting line-up are Weltimed, Venturer and Avalon Skipper, which have all secured secondline draws (Strollalong is nicely placed at No. 5), while Rule du Jour and Innocent Fella, both being produced fresh for this evening’s C2 event, are handily drawn and warrant respect.

Carmichael 10 Fair run on this course, July 9, after good second to Willow Chip at Blenheim. Useful stayer with some claims. 11 9931 Willy Run 2K. O’Reilly 10 Outstanding run to dead-heat with Idle Bromac over 2600 m on July 9. Should be improved and distance no worry. Likely winner. 12 7770 Citation I D. Mangos 20 Only racing fairly but could place at attractive odds. 13 0300 Le Marais 2F.
