Mt Cook work behind target
Wellington reporter The capital works programme for the redevelopment of the Mount Cook National Park village has fallen several years behind the target originally accepted as appropriate for this work, in what is now a World Heritage site. This was revealed by the National Parks and Reserve Authority in its annual report to Parliament. It said that for years part of its duty had been to advise on priorities for capital expenditure on im-
portant developments in national parks. That arrangement had worked well but in recent years the authority had been telling Parliament of its disappointment about the decreasing purchasing power available — as in the case of Mount Cook. The result had been that the arrangement for advising on priority for expenditure of maintenance and operating funds had remained in a rudimentary form and had been unsatisfactory, the authority said.
