Police consider part-time staff

PA Wellington The police say they are investigating the use of part-time staff who could hold other full-time jobs, much the same as territorials in the Army. A recently retired superintendent, Mr Peter Faulkner, is in Britain looking at the use of auxiliaries and is due to report to police headquar-

ters by next February. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Mooney said, “This is just a feasibility study to see what the advantages and disadvantages would be.” “We certainly have not made any decisions on introducing the scheme to either rural or urban areas and we will not be making any decisions be-

fore we look at the discussion paper.” Auxiliary police have been used in Britain for 150 years. They are trained to supplement police in times of emergency but also have jobs outside the police. Auxiliaries are also used in Canada, the United States and Singapore.
