Labour speech inspiring, say manufacturers
PA Wellington A speech by the Labour Party’s president, Mr Rex Jones, has won him a bouquet from the Textile and Garment Manufacturers’ Federation. The federation’s president, Mr David Watson, described an address by Mr Jones to the federation in Rotorua on Saturday as “one of the most inspiring and practical speeches I have had the pleasure to listen to.”
He said Mr Jones was “fully aware” of the unemployment problems in manufacturing,
and particularly the large number of second income-earners, mainly women, who were being put out of work in the textile and garment industry.
Mr Jones had told the federation New Zealand’s future was grim without a strong and competitive manufacturing base.
He had called for a new alliance between exporters and the unions to develop practical economic advice as an alternative to the “naive” theories advanced by the Treasury.
