Date change

By

The Gore Racing Club has announced that the Princess Mellay Stakes will be run in October this year instead of the traditional February date. The race, a listed one for three-year-old fillies and part of the Wrightson southern “Filly of the Year” series, is run over 1400 m and is now seen by the club as a lead-up race for the Wrightson One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton in November. The stake for the race will be $12,000. The race will be held on October 22, the first

day of the Gore Labour week-end meeting. Other features programmed for the meeting include the Rimu Park Handicap for two-year-olds ($5500) on the first day, and the Gore Cup ($9000) over 2000 m on Labour Day and the $6OOO Manor Park Handicap on the same day for three-year-olds and a heat of the Southland Three-Year-Old series. The change has come about as the result of a decision by the Racing Authority to change the club’s summer date in February to May in 1989.
