Mast problems continue

PA Auckland Digby Taylor’s ill-fated NZI Enterprise has lost another mast.

Two weeks ago the Bruce Farr-designed maxi racer was sold to an Italian owner who plans to start the boat in next year’s Whitbread Round the World Race. With a delivery crew of seven, the yacht left Auckland two days ago. Just 700 miles into its 15,000 mile

voyage to Portofino, a steel inner stay gave way. The giant mast sagged and broke below the deck.

A crewman, Andrea Henrirlet, said only fast work by the crew saved the mast from going over the side. Ropes were used to secure it and Enterprise limped back to Auckland yesterday. Henrirlet said he has no idea why the mast broke. Henrirlet said the boat

must be made ready for the Whitbread which starts from Portsmouth, England, in September, 1989.

Taylor who built the boat for the 1985 round the world race, lost the first mast halfway through the 27,000 mile event and withdrew. Another mast was lost while the yacht was on charter in the Bay of Islands after striking a marker buoy.
