Noahs Hotel ‘not for sale’
An Australian-based hotel company, Rydge Group, was looking at hotels in prime New Zealand locations to add to its chain, the general manager of Noahs Hotel, Christchurch, said yesterday. Mr Allan Winkel said that directors of the group would be visiting New Zealand to buy a further large top-class hotel. Noahs, which will have a name change to Rydges shortly, is the group’s New Zealand flagship. Mr Winkel denied Hotel Association speculation that Noahs was for sale and was one of the two
“substantial” Christchurch hotels being sought by the Tourist Hotel Corporation. The chairman of the association’s accommodation council, Mr Barry Rozynski, this week predicted that Noahs and the Chateau Regency Hotels were at the top of T.H.C.’s shopping list. Mr Winkel said it was speculation and Noahs’ new owner was pouring several million dollars into renovating the hotel’s ground floor. “With this kind of investment in the local tourism industry, there is no way the group would be interested in selling its New Zealand flagship,” he said.
