Five squad changes
Five changes have been made in the Canterbury rugby league squad which begins training this evening for the match against Southern Provinces at the Addington Show Grounds on July 31. Ross Taylor, John Green, Neville Woodham and Vince McCue return to the squad, and the young Papanui outside back, Kelvin Remi, is included for the first time. Of the side which lost to Auckland last month, Kevin Teague is not expected to play again this season because of a hamstring injury and Pomare Connell, Stuart Simcott, Logan Edwards and Gary McLauchian have been
omitted. Ironically, at least some of the discards could return to haunt the Canterbury selectors as members of the Southern Provinces team.
It is to be drawn from the Otago, Southland, West Coast and Canterbury Emerging Players combinations which competed in the South Island second division series.
Simcott and McLauchian represented Canterbury Emerging Players, but the Canterbury coselector and coach, Ray Haffenden, said yesterday there were no rules laid down as to whether Edwards or Connell would
also qualify. On the other hand, by choosing Woodham, Green, Remi and McCue the Canterbury panel has gained the services of potential opponents.
Another significant development was the switching of Brendon Tuuta from scrum-half to loose forward, making way for Woodham but shutting out the equally promising Edwards.
The Canterbury squad is:— Vince McCue, Lance Setu, Kelvin Remi, Steve Campbell, Mike Dorreen, Glen Moore, Mark Nixon, Neville Woodham, Brendon Tuuta, Gary Leek, Esene Faimalo, Wayne Wallace, John Green, Glenn Grut, Ross Taylor.
