Austrian leads rally
PA Rotorua The Austrian driver, Sepp Haider, defied the pundits on yesterday’s third leg of the Rothmans Rally of New Zealand and had a commanding 18-minute lead when the leg ended in Rotorua last evening. It was widely touted that the lack of four-wheel drive on Haider’s Opel Kadett would give the. advantage to others on the treacherously slippery gravel roads in yesterday's central North Island drive. The top New Zealanders, Possum Bourne, Brian Stokes, Tony Teesdale, Paddy Davidson and Simon Davis, all faded from the field. Their failure to complete the course for a variety of reasons catapulted Ray Wilson (Papatoetoe) into second place. Wilson, in his Mazda 323, won the first leg and, but for a puncture late in the last stage of the second leg resulting in the loss of eight minutes, would have started considerably closer in yesterday’s drive than eleventh.
