Event for Fremantle
NZPA-AAP Perth The inaugural world match racing championships to be staged in Fremantle in December will be the most significant yachting event held in Australia since the America’s Cup, organisers said yesterday. Announcing the event, the Royal Perth Yacht Club (R.P.Y.C.) said the international championship would help keep Fremantle at the forefront of
world sailing. To be raced over seven days, the match racing event will involve 10 international crews racing each other in identical 10.6 m long boats, which are being built in Fremantle. The RPYC hopes the world match racing conference will make Fremantle a permanent venue for the event. The 10 state of the art yachts — designed primarily for
match racing — will be used for a variety of later events over their 10-year life.
Match races will be staged over a one kilometre course within a few hundred metres of Fremantle’s Port Beach, making it much more accessible to spectators than the America’s Cup. Qualifiers so far include Perth’s Peter Gilmour, New Zealand’s Chris Dickson and America’s John Kolius.
