Dawn Mist’s win provides tonic

Dawn Mist provided the ideal tonic for her owner, Derek Copland, when she won the 1988 New Zealand Cup, at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday.

Copland had to return to hospital for minor surgery after he was kicked by a horse last August, and had entrusted his team to Tony Dickens, of Methven, for the last 12 months.

Dawn Mist settled in second place behind Pandalola in the early running yesterday, and it was not until the final bend that she slipped clear of her rivals to score an authoritative four-length victory. Call Me Patch was handy throughout and ground his way into second, while the favourite, Brydie Girl, met trouble in the early running and finished solidly for third.

Dawn Mist is by Mr Lithgow which has recently returned to Australia, and is from Copland’s own bitch, Misty Isle, which ran second to Charlie Irish in the race a few years ago. This was Dawn Mist’s second win from five starts at the distance and previously she has been found wanting over the concluding stages.

“I’ve been a lot harder on her this time. She’s taken a while to work out,” said Dickens. Since taking over the Copland team Dickens has led back 17 totalisator winners for the Mid-Can-terbury farmer, and with a number of youngsters coming through, including a Metal Band litter out of

Misty Isle, the pair look set for further success. Track record Bark Man Bark’s longheld track record of 19.34 s for the 330 m was lowered to 19.275, when the Australian-bred Profit Galore scorched over the distance in impressive style. Trainer Ray Adcock has always had a high regard for Profit Galore and he said when the black bitch started her racing career that she was the fastest greyhound he had handled.
