Road toll down
PA Wellington A big drop has occurred in the number of people killed on the road in the first six months of this year compared with last year, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries, yesterday.
In the first half of the year there were 366 road deaths compared with 428 in the first six months of 1987, a drop of 62. “Our road safety policies are working but there is a long way to go,” said Mr Jeffries. He warned drivers to be careful during winter when there were hazards such as slippery roads, fog, ice and snow. “There is only one sure way to handle poor visibility and slippery roads and that is by slowing down,” he said.
