Bull sale average drops
The average price for Stern-Angus bulls at the annual sale yesterday of Messrs J. R. and H. B. Fraser, Sterndale, Totara Valley, dropped considerably on last year’s sale. The 34 bulls sold at auction averaged $2829. Another sale immediately after the auction of a previously passed bull took total sales to $97,200. The average last year was $4260, with a total turnover of $143,350. The lower return this year was thought to be a reflection of the economic times. The auctioneer, Mr Pat Cooper, of Wrightsons stud stock, said he thought it was still an excellent sale.
Strong interest had been shown by commercial breeders. Buying power was spread throughout the South Island, and three bulls went to Australia. The top price was $7500 paid by Mr James Harris, of Armadale, New South Wales, for Stern 9322 AB. Other top sales were: $6600 to Hartley Hills Station, Sheffield; $6OOO to J. and R. A. Ballantyne, Gawler Downs, Ashburton; $5250 to Mrs J. M. and Estate S. T. Kitchen, Whataroa; $4lOO to Mr Neil Robinson; $4OOO to Mr Donald Fraser, Hakataramea Valley; $4OOO to J. R. Malphus, Albury; and $3700 to Mesopotamia Station, Rangitata Gorge.
