PA Auckland The Auckland police say a transvestite hired a Rolls-Royce and driver, paid with a stolen cheque and picked up bricks in the vehicle before the chauffeur’s suspicions were aroused.
The man, dressed as a woman, and two friends he had directed the driver to pick up in Pt Chevalier, were arrested by the police at x the Kiwis - Kumuls rugby league test at Carlaw Park.
A police spokesman said the trio had earlier convinced the driver they needed bricks from a demolition site to make a barbecue for the tangi of a relative who died at the week-
end. They then asked to be taken to the league ground in Parnell where the driver demanded part payinent while he waited for the game to end. When the transvestite handed him a cheque the driver used a car radio-telephone to check details.
A 40-year-old man will appear in the District Court at Auckland today charged with presenting a stolen cheque. The Rolls-Royce, of Hotel Transportation Services, was undamaged. The police were last evening trying to track the owner of the bricks which had been placed in the car boot.
