Auckland crew second
PA London Murray Jones and Greg Knowles are on target for Olympic honours after finishing second over all in the World Flying Dutchman championships at Medemblik in the Netherlands at the week-end. The Auckland crew came within a couple of metres of winning an exciting final race, finishing second behind Laurent Delage, of France. They needed to win the
race to take the championship from the overnight leader, Joergen Bojsen-Moller, of Denmark. And they needed Bojsen-Moller to finish seventh or worse. Both outcomes were on the cards for much of the race. The New Zealanders sailed with four others at the front of the 50-boat fleet, while the Dane trailed in ninth place. “Even on the second to last leg on the flat run it looked like we could do
it,” Jones said. “But then on the last beat BojsenMoller followed us as we got up into second place from fifth and he got up to third.”
Bojsen-Moller, who took the title with 25.4 points from Jones-Knowles on 35, goes to the .Olympics clear favourite after winning his last two regattas. The Kiwis, runners-up to the Dane at Keil and now Medemblik, must now be rated good medal prospects as well.
