Dunedin, Auckland and Wellington will be the test venues when the Pakistan cricket team tours New Zealand next summer.
The itinerary is similar to that undertaken by Pakistan on its last visit, four years ago. On that occasion Christchurch was also omitted from the test series, and instead was allocated a one-day international and a three-day fixture for Canterbury. The representatives of the two countries will return to Carisbrook, the scene of a dramatic New Zealand victory in 1984-85 when Jeremy Coney and Ewen Chatfield saw their side through with an unbroken partnership of 50 runs.
While the decision will undoubtedly disappoint Canterbury officials, their feelings will be shared by their counterparts in Hawke’s Bay. The New Zealand team will not play in Napier at all, cricket followers in that area having to settle for a match involving a Shell XI. The itinerary is.—
January 22, v. Auckland Invitation XI, Auckland; January 25-27, v. President’s XI,
Hamilton; January 29-31, v. Canterbury, Christchurch; February 3-7, first test, Dunedin; February 10-14, second test, Wellington; February 19-21 v. Shell XI, Napier; February 24-28, third test, Auckland. One-day internationals at Christchurch (March 4), Wellington (March 8), Auckland (March 11), Hamilton (March 14).
The Shell Series format follows the pattern of recent seasons. It begins with the Shell Cup limited-over fixtures over the New Year period, before the Shell Trophy is decided by eight rounds of three-day matches.
Canterbury will make an extensive northern tour in the middle of its campaign, with games at Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington. Its other away game is against Otago at Oamaru.
The Shell Series programme is.— Shell Cup — December 27, Auckland v. Otago, Wellington; Canterbury v. Wellington, Christchurch; Central v. Northern, Levin. December 29, Wellington v. Auckland, Wellington; Northern v.
