PA Auckland Three young would-be robbers were forced to abandon their raid on a Mangere motel when the proprietor could not hear their demands for money, the police said. Three teenagers, possibly male, entered the reception area of the Gold Star Motel in Mangere about 9 p.m. on Sunday dressed in Army gear and balaclavas.

One of the youths carried a shotgun and another what apeared to be a pistol. They made references to the motel till but the owner had his hearing aid turned down and could not understand what they •wanted.

The youths became frustrated and fled without any money, but took the keys to the motel’s courtesy van which were on the counter.

The police are investigating.
