Head returns to N.Z.
PA Wellington A preserved Maori head, the subject of an aborted London auction after an uproar about cultural insensitivity, will be returned to New Zealand for burial, the chairman of the Maori Council, Sir Graham Latimer, says. Sir Graham said he would give its English owner, Mrs Nancy Weller-Poley, a token of significance in exchange for the tattooed head. U I look forward to bringing it home and I suppose it might end the selling of human remains on the international market” The Maori Council, backed financially by the Government initiated legal action in May against the proposed sale of the head by a London auction house, Bonhams. Sir Graham was empowered by the courts to act as the head’s personal representative in legal proceedings. The bartering of the ancestral head, believed to have been preserved in the 1820 s, was labelled distasteful and an affront to the Maori people.
