Younger McEnroe out
NZPA-Reuter Boston A new McEnroe took centre court on the professional tennis circuit yesterday but it turned out to be a short coming-out party at the $U5415,000 ($618,000) United States Pro tournament. Patrick McEnroe, the younger brother of the former world No. 1, John, made his debut a brief one by losing 2-6, 1-6, in the first round to fellow-American Jimmy Arias. Patrick won SUSI3O9 (SNZI9SO) for his 73min on court. McEnroe may not yet have the shots, but there appeared to be no lack of self-confidence despite the defeat. “Believe it or not I feel encouraged,” said McEnroe, who will turn 22 this week. “I know everybody will look at the score and think I got my butt whipped, but I was in the games and controlling points.” A recent graduate of Stanford University, McEnroe’s lack of tournament play seemed to be a factor. When it came to the big points on McEnroe’s serves, it was Arias who came through. He broke in six of seven service games.
