No reprimand for Dwyer

PA Canberra The Australian Rugby Union president, Joe French, will not ask the Wallaby coach, Bob Dwyer, to tone down his criticism of referees. Mr Dwyer lashed out at the English referee, Fred Howard, after Sunday’s first test against the All Blacks in Sydney. He labelled Howard’s performance in the 32-7 All Black win “an abomination” and described him as “a novice.” The All Blacks scored

14 points in the opening 12min, and Dwyer said none should have been awarded for various infringements.

“What followed was an absolute travesty. I won’t be sorry to see Fred go,” Mr Dwyer said, in a reference to the already announced decision that the Scotsman Brian Anderson would be in charge for the second and third tests. However, Mr French defended Mr Dwyer’s right to speak out. “He is entitled to his

views on referees. And since we haven’t got him under contract, we can hardly fine him, can we?” he said. Mr French said he would “certainly not” ask Mr Dwyer to moderate his views on referees. Yesterday Mr Dwyer gave Mr Howard a parting shot.

“He just couldn’t handle the pressure and it became for the All Blacks a case of ‘let’s see how many laws we can break and get away with’."
