Prime lambs meet good inquiry

A strong prime lambs sale was the highlight of the Addington market yesterday. A small yarding and strong competition among buyers for the better quality stock saw prices recover from last week’s drop and continue to improve to reach prices of $29. The old ewe market also showed an improvement, especially for better stock. Prime lambs Lamb prices regained the drop experienced at last week’s sale and top quality lambs increased even further. Values for heavy lambs increased at least $3, with greater competition among buyers for a smaller yarding. Good quality butchers’ lambs sold particularly well, with prices reaching $29 for lambs from H. A. Patterson, Lakeside, and R. J. Middleton, Springston, and $28.80 from G. J. Mason, Springston. Several other sales were made at $26 to $2B. The lamb entry was 1520, compared with 2952 last week. Values were: Heavy lambs, $25 to $29. Medium lambs, $2O to $25. Light lambs, $lO to $2O. Store lambs Most prices for a small store lambs section ranged from $6 to $l4, although the bulk of lambs sold at $8 to $ll. Just 678 lambs were yarded, compared with 1892 last week. Prime sheep

A good sale of old ewes showed an over-all increase of $1.50 on last week as a result of another small yarding. Better quality stock attracted better competition and the market could have handled more heavy ewes. The large section of lighter

stock was still too much for buyers and prices remained depressed. Buyers showed a better demand for medium-weight hoggets and a line of woolly hoggets from G. D. Dench, Cashmere, made up to $24.20. A total of 516 adult sheep was yarded compared with 497 last week. Values were: Heavy ewes, to $18.20. Medium ewes, $ll to $l3. Light ewes, $8 to $lO. Sales included: — Ewes: S. F. and L. B. Prices were largely unchanged from last week. Prime cattle Cattle had a difficult sale, especially among the better quality, heavyweight animals. The quality was good, considering it was a mid-winter market, but a lack of buying competition made selling difficult. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold at 165 c to I7oc a kg; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 170 c to 175 c; and 270 kg and over, 165 c to 170 c. A total of 384 cattle was yarded, compared with 360 last week. Values were: Heavy steers, $6OO to $686. Medium steers, $5OO to $5BO. Light steers, $360 to $4BO. Heavy heifers, $4OO to $5OO. Allan Gray (Teddington), 4 at $316 to $350; Mount Stewart Partnership (Waiau), 7 at $358 to $5OO. Store cattle Many of the mediocre yarding of store cattle were difficult to sell and the market held few bright spots. Better quality beef-bred stock were able to maintain rates of recent sales. Mrs J. M. Buick, Fairlie, sold seven adult steers at $458 to $484, and C. W. and T. J. Saunders, Ohoka, sold seven steer calves at $298. Good quality 18 month steers made $330 to $350. A total of 118 store cattle was yarded. Dairy cows Only two of the four entries in the dairy section sold yesterday. A Friesian heifer due to a Friesian bull made $4OO and a Shorthorn with a Simmental cross calf made $282. Bobby calves Most Friesian bulls made $6O to $9O and Friesian heifers $3O to $6O. Most beef cross bulls made $6O to $92, with the heifers at $36 to $6B. A total of 101 calves was yarded. Prime pigs A very small yarding of good quality prime pigs was offered and attracted good interest from buyers. Values improved $lO to $l5 on last week, with top pigs selling to $154 and most porkers making more than $lOO. A large yarding of choppers also sold well, with the best cutting heavy choppers selling to $lBO. Most choppers made $l4O to $l6O. Values were: Light pork, $9O to $lOO. Medium to heavy pork, $lOO to $llO. Light to medium bacon, $ll5 to $l3O. Heavy bacon, to $154. Store choppers, $5O to $7O. Light choppers, $l2O to $l5O. Heavy choppers, $155 to $lB5. Store pigs Another medium sized yarding of store pigs was offered and values showed little change from last week. Poor or overfat pigs were not wanted. Good quality weaners made to $4O, but only very good slips made more than $5O. Breeding stock was mixed in quality and only the best young gilts maintained last week’s values. Other sows struggled to make $2OO. Values were: Small weaners, $24 to $3O. Good weaners, $33 to $42. Slips and small stores, $47 to $55. Large stores, to $65.
