New collection will delight knitters

Shepherd’s new pattern collection “All Men,” will be greeted enthusiastically by all knitters. Containing 26 designs, it is the answer to the shortage of patterns for men’s basic classics.

All styles have been designed in New Zealand for New Zealand knitters. Yarns, all pure wool, range from four-ply, for the more patient knitter who likes a finer texture, to 14-ply for the knitter with little leisure time who likes quick results. Sweaters with V and crew necks, cardigans and sleeveless tops will look equally good on the trendy man-about-town or a favourite grandfather.

Patterns come with three shoulder styles — dropped, raglan and set-in sleeves. The more experienced knitter could probably adapt the shoulder style and neckline according to preference. Most knitters will use this collection again and again.

The book’s cover features a striking design for a high-fashion V-neck jacquard Fair Isle sweater in black, white, grey and red — an exercise for more experienced knitters. Instructions are given for both four and eight ply yarns. Knitters will be able to have fun working out other equally eye-catching colour schemes. A The patterns are versa-

tile and will not date, making the collection a valuable reference. Old favourites such as the double breasted textured cardigan with a roll collar make a smart reappearance, this time with dropped shoulders.

No collection is complete without an aran sweater. The eight-ply semi-aran sweater with an Optional crew or V-neck will please knitters and wearers of this design. One clever design will be a hit with skiers and would-be skiers. Knitted in blue, teal and white 12ply yarn, it features the Olympic ski symbol. Textured patterns have enjoyed an upsurge in popularity this season and knitters will be able to choose from a selection which ranges from an un-

usual chevron stitch to a masculine “tyre tread” pattern to a striking cardigan.

Classic cables never date. They are used in several designs in the collection. One simple design knitted in eight-ply lambswool has Spartan cables with a ribbed pattern, a crew neck and round shoulders. Cables are also used on the sleeves of a four ply sweater with matching cardigan and saddle shoulders.

The collection is divided into two sections; the first giving attractive full page illustrations showing exactly how the finished garment looks. The second contains clear and easily followed directions.
