Problems on agenda at women’s conference
PA Wellington Fifty women from around New Zealand met in Wellington yesterday for the inaugural women’s conference of the Distribution Workers’ Federation.
Women drivers, store workers and shop employees were represented. The women’s officer, Ms Ses Salmond, said that
in spite of different areas of work, most women faced similar problems. “This conference allows us to share our experiences and work together for solutions.”
Equal pay would be high on the agenda, she said.
“For over two years shop workers have been campaigning for new
equal-pay legislation. “Retail work is undervalued and underpaid and without strong legislation the injustice our members face will continue.
“Now that legislation seems imminent, we need to work harder than ever to ensure it will be effective in dealing with the problem of low pay for women workers.”
