Refinery staff losing jobs
PA Whangarei Seventeen Marsden Point oil refinery middlemanagement staff were yesterday told they lose their jobs tomorrow.
The redundancies are the start of staff cuts which should result in refinery numbers being cut from 730 to about 600 by next year.
News of the redundancies came in telephone calls to the “Advocate” newspaper from refinery staff. The New Zealand Refining Company yesterday refused comment.
The personnel manager, Mr Neville Milne, said a press statement on the issue would be released today.
The newspaper said staff were told of the layoffs at 10 a.m. yesterday in a letter which also said, "It is no reflection on the workers’ performance but is a consequence of competitive constraints.” The lay-offs were the first step to reconstruct the company to face international competition, workers were told.
