Revellers go soft

NZPA-PA London Wimbledon’s “Champagne Charlies” have gone teetotal, it was disclosed yesterday. The revellers, who normally spend Wimbledon fortnight quaffing vintage champagne, have given it up in favour of orange juice and mineral water. Caterers say sales of alcohol inside the All England Club have dropped significantly on last year’s figures. However, it is not the prices which are putting them off — it is the threat of the breathalyser. After last month’s purge on drunk-drivers at Ascot, and the likely crackdown at Henley, the Wimbledon crowds are taking no chances. But while the drinkers are changing their habits the eaters are refusing to change theirs. The caterers flew in thousands of Florida blueberries to challenge the traditional strawberry. Tennis fans rejected them and they were promptly replaced with the British fruit.
