Angus withdraws from squad

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

A combination of waning interest and recurring injury has persuaded the former Canterbury strokeplay and matchplay golf champion, James Angus, to withdraw from the provincial representative squad. “I’ve lost a bit of inerest and I’ve got a hip problem which stems from an injury some years back,” Angus said yesterday. “I’m getting a bit older and the injury is aggravated after playing a round. With the amount of practice needed to perform well at Canterbury level I decided I was not prepared to push on.” Angus, who missed most of last season when overseas, wasted no time

in making an impact on his return. He won the Templeton summer open title in a play-off from John Williamson in February and was named in the Canterbury squad in April.

However, Angus is available for his club, Russley, in the premier interclub competition for the Woodward Cup, although he will not return from Australia in time for the first three rounds. Angus has played 86 matches in the championship.

• The on again-off again Canterbury fixture against Aorangi is on, confirmed for the Methven club on July 17. Two newcomers were named yesterday in the 16-man senior team by the selec-

tion panel of Noel Bain, Geoff Saunders and John Allin. They were the juniors, Karl Mariu and Alister McCall.

The team, in playing order, is:—

Senior: Brent Paterson (Coringa), John Williamson (Christchurch), Tony Christie (Waitikiri), Murray Brown (Waitikiri), Keith Mills (Russley), Mark Street (Harewood), Rick Vincent (Christchurch), lan Carruthers (Coringa), Karl Mariu (Kaiapoi), Alister McCall (Templeton), Ken Collett (Waitikiri), Warwick Sherwood (Waitikiri), Richard Hurley (Waimairi Beach), Ross Jones (Templeton), Steven Greenall (Waimairi Beach), Kerry' Lake (Harewood). Reserves: Brett Tucker (Christchurch), Hugh McLeod (Harewood), Neville Brightwell (Templeton), John Hazeldine (Russley).

Junior: Jason Sincock (Waitikiri), Alistair Sidford (Harewood), Matthew Brownlee (Waitikiri), Anthony Woodgate (Templeton), Curtis Mercer (Christchurch), Patrick Fraher (Harewood), Scott Sibley (Avondale), Gavin Levy (Waimairi Beach).

Reserves: Andrew Hobbs (Templeton), Scott Codyre (Templeton), Shane Scott (Russley).

• A proposed representative contest between Canterbury and Tasman this week-end has been cancelled. Tasman wanted the fixture to be played at Greenacres in Nelson, Canterbury wanted it at Shirley, the venue for the Government Life national tournament in November. The associations will consider introducing the competition next year.
