Slick run from Idle Bromac at Addington trials

By

JEFF SCOTT

Times have been a little rough for Robert Dunn in recent months, but events took a turn for the better when he produced Idle Bromac in winning form at the Addington trials yesterday.

Dunn’s ill-luck began when National Glory (which he part-owns) ws withdrawn from the $140,000 Cigna Sires’' Stakes Final only a few hours before the event on May 25. More importantly, the ripped ligament the gelding sustained robbed Dunn of a chance to win a $lOO,OOO bonus on the night and also sidelined the talented juvenile from last Saturday’s $150,000 Benson and Hedges Juvenile Championship. The Broadfield horseman has also, for various reasons, lost four of his best racing team this autumn-winter to other stables. That’s That, the winner of nine races and over $BO,OOO, will not rejoin the team next season. A partowner of the rising five-year-old, “Hoppy” Rundle of Kaikoura, has taken over the immediate training of the Clever Innocence gelding. Charles Nero, which won four from 12 starts this season, has been tansferred to Jack Smolenski’s team, while MacHismo, which won twice and was disqualified from first in another race in five starts this term, is to be trained by Greg Hope. Quest For Glory, which showed initial promise for Dunn, has joined Erin Crawford’s Rangiora stable. Dunn, whose team has won 21 races this season, the last being on Anzac

Day, has Idle Bromac forward to resume at the Addington July meetings, along with the maiden Mighty Honkin, which fought on from the trail for. second in his CO mobile heat yesterday. Tuapeka Kay (Smooth Fella—Tuapeka Star filly), the $lBO,OOO yearling purchased by Yonkers Breeding and Racing Partnership last year, will be ready for the trials in three weeks, while Rule du Jour (C2) has been back in work for 10-12 weeks. % National Glory and Defoe will spell until August 1, but others back in work include: Itz Magic (C 3 Olliver Lee (C2), Recklaw (Cl), and the placed maiden, Skipper Forbes. Tight-class mare, Late Lustre, is back in light work after failing to get in foal, while Dunn has high hopes for a younger brother to Laser Lad (which trots), a Game Pride —Tough Girl colt and a half-brother by Bo Scots Blue Chip to former NZ Oaks winner, Lady’s Rule. Idle Bromac, which was showing the effects of a virus when he last raced in February, outfinished the pacemaking Charming George in the C3-C5 heat yesterday, the leaders running the last 800 m in a sharp 57.4 and the closing 400 m in 27.9. “He has matured a bit so I’ve left the spreaders off him this campaign and he’ll race without them

too,” said Dunn of the El Patron gelding, which took 3:28.1 or the full 2600 m yesterday. Le Due, back with his Prebbleton owner John Henderson, finished best from the third line to win the Cl-C3 trot in a useful 3:28, while Gasthof should not be long quitting maidens after giving the leaders 60m early and cruising home to win by three lengths in 3:29.7, breezing over his closing quarter in 28.4. Kotare Cruise, trained by Tony Abell, drew attention to his juvenile prospects at Addington on Saturday week when he dared out over his last 800 m in 58.2 and his closing 400 m in 28.4 to win by five lengths. My Papa, trialing to the satisfaction of the stewards after being stood down at Blenheim, finished best after getting a perfect drag in the Cl and faster mobile heat, recording a useful 3:21.3.
