Native forests
Sir, —Oliver Riddell reports (June 23) that the fate of southern South Westland’s publicly owned forest is still in doubt. This doubt would largely be removed if Forest Corp declared where it stands. Surely ForestCorp’s statement that it has not contemplated any forest harvesting in South Westland does not equate with Timberlands’ advocacy of a logging
option for the area. The “area of interest” to Timberlands is the major portion of the lowland forest which is subject to a recommendation from Dr Blakeley’s working party. Forest Corp should rein in its subsidiary in the interests of consistency and the need to achieve a responsible decision.---Yours, etc., R. J. BUCHANAN. June 24, 1988. ,
