City development
Sir, —When I visited your city I was impressed by its interest and beauty, and by the fact that parts of the city were unique, human in scale, and beautiful. That heritage of style and character is being destroyed to be replaced by smaller and less stylish copies of the same anonymous offices and hotels which are being built all over the world. What is being permitted is what happened to parts of my own city of Sydney. I am a university lecturer in town planning, a former president of the Royal Australian Planning Institute, and an executive councillor of the Australian National Trust and we have been fighting for many years to save the unique heritage and historic qualities of Sydney. Tourists do not come to see more of the same boring office blocks and international hotels — they come to see the older and unique parts of the city. While some older buildings must go to make way for growth and change, it is absolutely vital to conserve the areas which are the real heart and soul of the city. — Yours, etc., STEPHEN HARRIS.
