‘Okkie’ spoils secret mission

NZPA-PA London An orphan baby killer whale has scuppered a secret North Sea antiterrorist training mission by the elite Royal Marines Special Boat Squadron. They were recently conducting an exercise near the Brae Alpha oil rig, 241 km from Aberdeen, when the 3.6 m mammal popped up alongside their small Zodiac motorboat to see what was going on.

The startled Commandos quickly turned their fast boat round and disappeared from the scene.

Workers on the rig have adopted the whale, which is affectionately known as “Okkie.” The North Sea oil men think “Okkie” is female, aged about 18 months.
