The Tribunal found that as the commercial fisheries in the Northland area have developed they have interfered with the Muriwhenua people's “full, exclusive and undisturbed right to maintain the develop their fishing capabilities”. This already widely discussed and debated report has serious implications for the settlement of competing claims between Maori and commercial interests for traditional fishing grounds.
