South Korea invites N.Z. skaters to train

New Zealand ice racers might soon have the opportunity of gaining international experience without having to meet the prohibitive costs involved in seeking competition in Europe. The president of the Ice Racing Federation of New Zealand, Pam Gray, who returned to Christchurch recently after attending the International Skating Union’s congress in Davos, Switzerland, said that informal discussions with South Korean delegates led to an invitation being extended to New Zealand skaters to train in Seoul

in November. South Korea is highly ranked in world ratings and any New Zealand skater accepting the invitation would only have to meet travelling expenses to and from the country. The New Zealand skaters would train with the South Korean national team.

Mrs Gray said that South Korea also offered to hold a Pacific Rim meeting in Seoul in 1990, and it was likely that New Zealand as well as Australia, China and Japan would be represented in that competition.
