Reporter role ended obscurity
J “Hot Metal” (8 p.m. on One) has cast John Gordon-Sinclair back into the public eye after a period of relative obscurity. Sinclair plays Bill Tytla, a cub reporter on “The Crucible” — a Fleet Street daily run by business tycoon Terence “Twiggy” Rathbone (Robert Hardy). After early beginnings with the Glasgow Youth Theatre, Sinclair had instant success as the star of “Gregory’s Girl,” Bill Forsyth’s much-praised and very successful 1980 | film comedy. Having lived in Glasgow 3 all his life, Sinclair moved to London in 1982 and has worked mainly in the theatre.
He counts a part in the production of “The Lemmings are Coming” — an improvised story of five young Scots living in London — as one of his most enjoyable roles yet. Sinclair sees directing as his eventual career. He is honest about his ambitions and about his ability as an actor. “I’m not happy with my acting and there are a lot of things which I wish I was better at. “The problem is that although I enjoy acting very much, apart from ‘Hot Metal,’ only ‘The Lemmings are Coming’ and ‘Gregory’s Girl’ are things I’ve done that I would like to do again,’’ he says.
