Minority Govt for France
NZPA-Reuter Paris
President Francois Mitterrand has committed France to a minority Socialist Government, amid strong indications that he will win tacit support from Communists.
Mr Mitterrand, addressing the nation on Tuesday after his Socialist Party failed to win an absolute majority in Sunday’s General Elections, said: “Have you given me the means I asked you for? The answer is yes.”
The President said he would ask the Prime Minister, Michel Rocard, to remain in office, form a new Government and present legislation to Parliament when its next session begins on June 23. “France is and will be governed,” Mr Mitterrand, aged 71, said.
Mr Rocard’s Socialists fell short of an outright majority in the National Assembly by 13 seats, and two parties, the Communists and the Centrist C.D.S. could provide vital support.
A senior Communist Party official, Andre Lajoinie, said on Tuesday evening that the 27 Communist deputies would not join Centrists and Conservatives in a vote of no confidence against Mr Rocard’s Government.
