Fergie backs fashion winner
NZPA-AP London The Duchess of York backed a fashion winner at Royal Ascot yesterday — in colour if not in style. The Duchess, who is seven months pregnant, wore a hold sunshine yellow maternity dress for the first day of the race meeting. Fashion pundits described yellow as the colour of the day, closely followed by bright pinks and greens. “Strong colours, especially splashy yellow, seem to be popular this year,” said fashion commentator, Mrs Valarie Burholt. “I thought the Duchess looked very nice in bright yellow, and it is difficult to dress well when you are that size.”
The Duchess braved the hot sunshine and pressing crowds to attend what is one of her favourite Royal events, where three years ago her romance with Prince Andrew blossomed.
Yesterday she joined other members of the Royal Family in what must have been a taxing walk for her from the Royal Box to the paddock.
Apart from the carriage procession down the course, it was the only time she ventured from the Royal Box. The bare-legged Duchess matched her flowing dress with a large black hat, black gloves and sensible flat-heeled slingback yellow shoes. Members of the Royal party reflected the colour trends. The Queen was in apricot, Princess Margaret in electric blue and the Princess of Wales in blue and white.
Elsewhere, the fashions ranged from the discreetly elegant to the disastrously ostentatious.
