Local bodies consider boycott

KAY FORRESTER
New Zealand local authorities may boycott the work schemes for gangs announced this week by the Government.
This move won unanimous support at a Local Government Association conference workshop in Christchurch yesterday when proposed by a Porirua City councillor, Mr Matthew Nolan.
The proposal, unanimously supported by the workshop, will go to the conference for debate today. A policy statement seeking Government action on work schemes, regional development and incentives to encourage growth won unanimous support from the’ workshop. It was prepared by a working party of six, led by the Mayor of Westport, Mr Pat O’Dea, which was formed at a meeting on Monday evening where delegates’ anger at the effect of Government policies expressed itself in calls for the Government to resign. The call was repeated yesterday in the form of a suggested no-confidence vote in the Government. The vote was not put to the meeting.
