Changes to war pensions likely
PA Wellington Legislation to change the way war pension applications and reviews were handled was likely to be passed by early next year, the Minister in charge of War Pensions, Dr Cullen, has said. Under the new system, decisions on individual applications and reviews would be made by a representative of the Returned Services Association and a district officer of the Social Welfare Department, Dr Cullen said in a speech to the R.S.A. Dominion Council, in Wellington recently.
An amendment to war pensions legislation would also enable widowers of servicewomen to receive the same entitlement as war widows. Dr Cullen noted the
R.S.A. executive endorsed a proposal to move towards a single, unified structure of veterans’ allowances.
“I have asked my department for a further report on the matter as my initial reaction is a favourable one.”
Most war pensions and allowances were regularly adjusted for inflation. But some grants for war bursaries, gallantry awards, funeral grants, furniture loans and motor-vehicle loans were not, he said.
Dr Cullen said he was aware of the anomaly but spending restraints prevented any immediate change.
“It is my hope that when I next address your association’s meeting I may be able to announce some good news in this regard.”
