Service wants clients

The Riccarton Counselling Service, with a staff of two, does not have enough clients. Clients used to be referred to the service by local doctors and the marriage counselling service which was being overwhelmed at one stage, but now fewer people were coming, said one of the counsellors, Mrs Betty Beresford. She said the lull could

probably be blamed on the public’s not knowing anything about the counselling service. Having trained as a counsellor for two years before her voluntary work with the Riccarton Counselling Service, Mrs Beresford said she had dealt with a wide variety of people in her job. “Many of them are first-time mothers who are overwhelmed by their

new role as care-giver to a baby and unable to cope with the sudden change.

“But we have also dealt with the elderly, the bereaved and partnership problems,” Mrs Beresford said.

Appointments with the service are free and can be made through the Riccarton Borough Council, but Mrs Beresford said the service welcomed donations.
